Vistasort Knows Product Flow

"From the combine to the bag" is not a slogan. It is the sequence every processing line follows. Knowing where each piece of seed processing equipment fits in that sequence, which crops it handles best, and how the machines work together is what turns a list of equipment into a line that makes grade.

Since 1986, Vistasort has been the source for seed processing equipment Saskatoon farms and plants count on, supplying and integrating seed cleaning and grain processing lines across Western Canada. We represent leading manufacturers, we are an authorized Carter Day dealer for Western Canada, and we build our own VistaSort optical color sorter. Every recommendation starts with your crop, your grade targets, and your throughput.

  • Full line integration, from pre-cleaning through to packaging
  • Equipment selected for Canadian crops and Canadian conditions
  • Parts and service support from Saskatoon
  • Installation, commissioning, and operator training
"There is no single machine that cleans grain. It takes the right combination of equipment, in the right sequence, configured for the right crop."

From the Combine to the Bag

Every seed cleaning line follows the same five stages, and each stage handles what the one before it cannot. Select a machine to jump to it.

  1. 1

    Pre-Cleaning

Protect the line and take the bulk of light material and metal out at intake.

  2. 2

    Primary Cleaning & Sizing

Remove most foreign material by size and weight, and grade by size where needed.

  3. 3

    Secondary Separation

Separate what screens and air cannot: density, length, and shape.

  4. 4

    Optical Sorting

Remove defects you can only see, as the final quality check.

  5. 5

    Finishing

Polish or dehull the product before treating or packaging.

Seed Processing Equipment by Line Stage

All 12 machines, grouped by the stage of the line where they work. Each card shows what the machine separates by and what it removes.

1

Stage 1: Pre-Cleaning

Protect the line and take the bulk of light material and metal out at intake.

LMC aspirator for pre-cleaning seed and grain, removing dust, chaff, and light material with airflow
Separates by: Weight (air)LMC

Aspirator

Removes: Dust, chaff, hulls, broken seeds, and light immature kernels

Draws air across a falling curtain of product, lifting off light material while heavier seed passes through. Placed early in the line, it takes load off the air screen cleaner and improves the efficiency of everything downstream. Lab sample testing is available for LMC aspirators.

Inline magnetic separator for removing ferrous metal from grain and seed streams
Separates by: Metal (magnet)

Magnetic Separator

Removes: Bolts, wire, wear particles, and other ferrous metal

Installs inline on elevators, conveyors, or spouts to catch ferrous metal before it reaches high-speed machines like hullers, gravity separators, and color sorters. Vistasort includes magnetic protection in every complete line design.

2

Stage 2: Primary Cleaning & Sizing

Remove most foreign material by size and weight, and grade by size where needed.

Clipper Conquest 286 air screen cleaner, seed processing equipment Saskatoon supplied by Vistasort
Separates by: Size + weightClipper

Air Screen Cleaner

Removes: Oversized and undersized material, weed seeds, dust, and light kernels

The workhorse of every cleaning line. Screens scalp off oversized material and drop out undersized seed while aspiration lifts off light material. Vistasort supplies Clipper air screen cleaners from on-farm to commercial scale, plus replacement screens for almost any crop.

Sizing shaker with multiple vibrating screen decks for grading seed and grain by size
Separates by: Size (multiple decks)

Sizing Shaker

Removes: Splits product into two or more precise size grades

Vibrating screen decks classify product into close-tolerance size fractions. Used to make export size grades of lentils and peas, size grass seed, and grade malt barley plumpness. It can run after primary cleaning or near the end of the line for final grading.

3

Stage 3: Secondary Separation

Separate what screens and air cannot: density, length, and shape.

LMC destoner for removing stones, dirt clods, and heavy foreign material from seed and grain
Separates by: Density (heavy)LMC

Destoner

Removes: Stones, dirt clods, glass, and other heavy foreign material

Airflow and a vibrating inclined deck float the crop while heavy contaminants are conveyed to a separate discharge. Essential in lentil, chickpea, pea, and soybean lines, where one stone in food-grade product can cause a buyer rejection.

LMC gravity separator for density separation of seed and grain, seed processing equipment Saskatoon supplied by Vistasort
Separates by: DensityLMC

Gravity Separator

Removes: Light, shrivelled, immature, and frost-damaged kernels, plus ergot

Airflow, vibration, and a tilted deck stratify product into density layers, separating kernels that look identical but differ in weight. It usually follows air screen cleaning and destoning and comes before color sorting.

Carter Day Modular Uniflow indent separator for length grading seed and grain
Separates by: LengthCarter Day

Indent Separator

Removes: Wild oats in wheat, short weed seeds, and broken kernels

A rotating cylinder lined with small pockets lifts short kernels out of the grain while long kernels travel out the end. Vistasort is an authorized Carter Day dealer for Western Canada and supplies the full Uniflow lineup.

Carter Day disc separator with pocketed cast discs for multiple length separations
Separates by: Length (multiple cuts)Carter Day

Disc Separator

Removes: Weed seeds, oats, and brokens in several length cuts at once

Pocketed cast discs on one shaft make several length separations in a single machine. The Carter Day Disc Cylinder Separator adds indent cylinders to produce five clean streams in one pass.

Spiral separator for separating round seeds from flat or irregular seeds
Separates by: Shape (roundness)

Spiral Separator

Removes: Round seeds such as vetch or wild pea, or flat and irregular seeds

Round seeds gather speed and roll to the outside of a multi-turn spiral chute while flat or irregular seeds stay on the inner track. It needs no power beyond the feed conveyor, and units are often run in banks for more capacity.

4

Stage 4: Optical Sorting

Remove defects you can only see, as the final quality check.

5

Stage 5: Finishing

Polish or dehull the product before treating or packaging.

Bean polisher for removing surface dust from beans, lentils, and chickpeas
Separates by: Surface finish

Bean Polisher

Removes: Fine surface dust on beans, lentils, and chickpeas

A rotating brush or abrasive drum gently scours the seed coat to improve appearance and cut dust in handling. Standard in food-grade pulse lines, usually the last step before packaging.

Codema VSH-2096 impact huller for dehulling oats, sunflower, buckwheat, and hemp seed
Separates by: Hull removalCodema

Impact Huller

Removes: Hulls and outer coats from oats, sunflower, buckwheat, and hemp

Vistasort supplies the Codema VSH-2096 impact huller. It throws product against an impact surface at a controlled speed to crack the hull without damaging the kernel. It usually follows pre-cleaning and destoning, and comes before gravity and optical sorting to separate hulled from unhulled product.

Seed Processing Equipment FAQ

Answers to common questions about choosing seed cleaning and grain processing equipment.

A destoner removes heavy foreign material such as stones, dirt clods, and glass that is denser than the crop. A gravity separator works within the seed lot itself, separating light, shrivelled, or immature kernels from heavy, well-filled ones. Both use airflow and vibration but target different density ranges. In most lines the destoner comes first to remove heavy contaminants, followed by the gravity separator for precise density grading of the crop.
An air screen cleaner separates by size and weight: screens remove material that is too large or too small, and aspiration removes light material. A gravity separator separates by density, so it can split two kernels that are the same size but different in weight. The air screen cleaner does the bulk separation first, and the gravity separator follows to refine the product.
An indent separator. Wild oats are about the same width and weight as wheat, so screens and air cannot separate them, but they are longer. A Carter Day Uniflow indent cylinder lifts the shorter wheat kernels out and lets the longer oats tail out the end. For several length separations at once, a Carter Day disc separator or Disc Cylinder Separator can be used.
A typical lentil or pea line includes an aspirator and an air screen cleaner to remove field debris, a destoner for stones, a gravity separator for shrivelled or light seed, and a VistaSort optical color sorter to remove discolored or damaged seed. A sizing shaker makes export size grades, and a bean polisher is added in food-grade lines. Vistasort configures each line to your throughput and grade targets.
Ergot removal usually combines gravity separation and optical color sorting. Ergot bodies differ in density from wheat kernels, so a gravity separator removes most of the contamination, and a VistaSort optical color sorter removes the rest by their dark color. Ergot tolerances in Canadian wheat are set by the Canadian Grain Commission and vary by grade.
Product flows by gravity down a chute past high-resolution CCD cameras, with optional infrared cameras for defects the eye cannot see. When the system detects a defect such as a discolored, diseased, or foreign kernel, a high-speed ejector removes it from the stream in milliseconds. VistaSort color sorters are built by Vistasort, with more than 180 systems installed in over 20 countries.
